Rapid learning of English language: Total Immersion
Language learning method
Total immersion language learning method is one of the best methods available
for learning any second language within a short period. It is a method by with
students is exposed to a culture where only second language is spoken. By this
method, the students internalize the second language very fast and become
fluent and confident in that language.
In 1960’s, a group of teachers in Cuernavaca, Mexico started using this method
for teaching Spanish as a second language. They made the students to live with
Mexican families in “total immersion” and forced them to use Spanish that they
have been learning. They also conducted small classes of 1 to 5 students per
teacher in their schools to teach Spanish language. This method had given
astounding results for the students and this method became very popular and
spread to other parts of the world as a tool for rapid learning of second
language.
This ‘total immersion’ is based on the assumption that most students of any
second language are able to internalize and actively use only a small percentage
of the language to which they have been exposed. Though they may have
studied grammatical rules and memorized vocabulary, many students have
difficulty putting what they have learned to use, especially in listening and
speaking. This made students to forget the lessons they have learned. It is
inherently difficult to internalize and put to use a foreign language in a large
classroom experience.
This total immersion language method can be followed easily but it needs to
meet a set of basic requirements for successful implementation.
1). Language teaching with one to one, or not more than three students. This
helps to allow more interactive participation with each student.
2). To communicate and build friendships with native speakers so that they can
put into use what they have previously learned.
3). Live with native families and get “totally immersed”. “Total immersed”
means the families with whom you are completed dependent for meeting your
daily needs, knows the second language you planned to learn. Otherwise you
are forced to learn second language fast.
The students find it very difficult at the beginning and will lessen as the course
proceeds.
This approach build has been proven to increase confidence in pronunciation,
speaking, and listening skills, which is key to developing a love of the language,
and also helps build a solid foundation for grammar, reading, and writing.
