About Reading

Reading comprehension is a complex process which comprises use of many
abilities. When we read, we should be able to recall and analyze information
afterwards.

In reading comprehension,

  • Reader should be able to select the important points from what he has
read and be able to draw general conclusions.

  • Reader should be able to differentiate between fact and opinion.

  • Reader should be able to make deductions, draw inferences, be aware
    of implications and interpret information.

  • Reader need to relate what we have read to our prior knowledge and
experience, to see it in context.

  • Reader should evaluate and discuss what he read with others.

Much of this activity takes place anyway, of course, quite unconsciously, but
reminding ourselves of what we need to be doing should help us to do it
more effectively.

Factors affecting Reading Comprehension

The following factors affect the quality and quantity of reading
comprehension
Reading Speed
Purpose of
reading
Content for
reading
Layout of
reading matl.
Environment

How your eyes move when you are reading?.

During reading eyes move in a very rapid series of small jerks, or saccades.
This
saccades are visible by others when you observe the movement of large
objects such as a running car and not visible clearly when a person reads a
book or a news paper. A Pause or fixations between saccades makes the
mind to register the words on the reading materials. Just like photography.
The amount you read at each fixation depends upon your span of perception
or eye span.

Using your eye span in order to increase your reading speed, you have to
learn to space these fixations out more. Most slow readers read the words
read by the eyes during an eye span (Within 400 milliseconds).

Example.

    HOW

'HOW' at a time to grasp the
meaning,then see the other
word.
FAST READER

HOW ARE YOU MY FRIEND

*A fast reader sees a set of words
' HOW ARE YOU MY FRIEND' at a
time to grasp the meaning
every word and yet you only have
to look at a word to realise that
you see more
than one word at a time.
